  • Ask permission before petting someone else’s dog, no matter how small, cute or friendly that dog may seem.
  • There is no such thing as a "bad" breed of dog. Any type of dog can bite.
  • Do not try to hug or kiss a dog - many dogs don't like it!
  • Do not stare into a dog’s eyes - Staring a dog in the eyes tells him you want to fight.
  • Do not approach a dog you do not know.
  • NEVER run up to a strange dog!
  • Do not pet dogs who are:
    • Sleeping
    • Eating
    • Behind Fences
    • Tied Up/Chained
    • In Vehicles
    • Hurt or Sick
  • Never enter a dog's yard or kennel - even a dog you know - without an adult.
  • Do not try to help a dog who is trapped or tangled. Get an adult for help!
  • Do not chase or tease dogs. If a dog moves away, he doesn't want to play.
  • Do not take a dog’s food, bones, or toys - even from a dog you know.
  • If a loose dog approaches you, DO NOT RUN OR SCREAM. Stand very still and quiet, with your hands covering your face and eyes, until it goes away.
  • Always act kindly and gently. Animals have feelings, just like people.
